Article says the rider is in serious condition. Here's hoping he's going to be okay...

This is one thing that I often think about when I stop on a bike, that there could be someone barrelling up behind me in a bigger vehicle. I tend to keep an eye in my mirrors when I'm stopped, just in case. Here though, it doesn't appear that the motorcycle was stopped, just that an SUV going faster than him rammed him from behind... scary stuff.  There are pictures of the bike and accident scene here, in the full article.

Stay safe out there.

Unlike what the article says, that crash is not on Dallas, its in the big parking area for tour buses where the cruise ships come in.  Hmmm... the plot thickens.

And not like he was on a scooter!  Bikes don't much more visible or with more taillights!

I'm at Royal Roads and I know a couple people who witnessed it. Apparently it looked very bad for the rider. I heard that there's not much left of the bike and the rider's clothes were strewn around the scene.

One friend who saw it described it as 'horrific'. My thoughts are with the rider.

I believe the bike was yellow?

No doubt, Randy!

Here's the news story about the SUV vs. motorcycle. Sounds like the SUV was 100% at fault, and driving like a maniac.

More info on the collision at Royal Roads. My friend who saw it happen said the driver turned left across the double-solid line from Sooke Rd. into the Royal Roads Cafe parking lot, in front of the motorcycle. The motorcyle t-boned the car.

It may or may not be relevant to this accident, but it's a good reminder that you should always look in your mirrors, and you should never put the bike in neutral when stopped.  Always be ready to get out of the way of a vehicle coming up from behind.  I was once sitting on my bike at a light and watched a pickup ram hard into the car beside me in the curb lane.  Had the truck been in my lane, I would have had to exit in a hurry or be the meat in a cage sandwich.

I agree, I am waiting to see how the news will be spinning all of the recent motorcycle accidents. Hopefully it will be a call to look out for bikes or a ticket campaign looking for distracted drivers or something and not a call on "unsafe motorcycles". I almost always have a way out of where I am stopped at a light. Keeping an eye on whats going on behind me and if I am in the right hand lane cars trying to slip by my bike to make the corner that one has almost gotten me hit a few times.

I wonder if the riders in question were riding with full gear and if it helped?  Granted, not much you can do if an SUV tries to run you down, but when the car pulled a Crazy Ivan in front of the bike, landing in gear would likely mitigate the injuries considerably.

So, the plot has thickened on the Ogden Point crash. VicPD is looking for witnesses to it as it's now thought to have been no mistake, and the driver targeted and mowed down the bike and rider.

If you saw anything, or know anyone who did, send them this link:
